TIRA members understand first-hand that expert schooling assistance for transferees with school-age children can be a dealbreaker in accepting an assignment. Importantly, schooling support for children affects the entire family’s adjustment and successful assimilation to their new location.
Engaging with local education experts will help families identify the best-fit school options for their child to align with the parents’ education goals.
Factors to consider when researching best-fit schools when on an international assignment include: a school’s culture, location of the school, diversity of student population, support services and activities offered, curricula suited to students’ interests and strengths, affordability, and alignment with parent’s longer-term educational goals for their child.
Our TIRA members in the UAE, Sweden, Singapore, Italy, and New York City share their knowledge of the educational landscape and highlight their high-touch support.
Facts about the education landscape:
EER Middle East shares that one of the most unique aspects of education in the UAE is the diversity of curricula available for prospective students. With such an international population, assignees can pick the education pathway that best suits their child. The top curricula offered include the UK, the USA, and the International Baccalaureate.
Nimmersion in Sweden is recognized for its inclusivity and strong student support. The school year typically starts in mid-August and concludes in early June. The school year is divided into two main terms: the autumn term (August to December) and the spring term (January to June). Education is free from compulsory school through university, and the government heavily subsidizes preschool, making it accessible for all families. Meals are included at both preschool and compulsory school levels and are provided at no cost to students during school hours. Additionally, school supplies are usually covered during compulsory school, ensuring all students have the necessary study materials. This approach highlights Sweden’s dedication to educational equality. Importantly, students in Sweden are encouraged to develop critical thinking and critical thinking skills, often with greater freedom in choosing their areas of study.
Relo Network Asia in Singapore reminds us that public and private education systems offer high-quality teaching and facilities. Most expat parents choose to send their children to international schools. Access to local government schools is extremely limited to foreigners and the application process is stringent. Application to local schools and school allocation is centrally managed by the Ministry of Education (MOE), no local school tour is allowed.
Relo Network in Singapore anticipates challenges to obtain school places at certain top-tier schools. Parents can find French, Australian, Swiss, German, Dutch, Indian, Korean, and Japanese schools.
Overall, there are international school places available, however, families may need to be prepared not to receive a place in their preferred school, particularly a top-tier one unless they apply well in advance, i.e., at least one year or more. They recommend that parents have a backup school when applying for top-tier schools. Access to top-tier schools is still a significant challenge. Places for certain schools such as Tanglin Trust and United World College (UWC) are usually waitlisted, sometimes for up to 2 years.
Singapore American School (SAS) is also within this tier and slightly different as it focuses on the U.S. curriculum and offers priority to American citizens first, then those working for American companies second. There is still significant demand for places and waitlists are expected.
According to Principal Relocation Company in Italy, compulsory education in Italy lasts 10 years, from 6 to 16 years of age, and includes the eight years of the first cycle of education and the first two years of the second cycle, which can be attended at secondary school – state-run – or at regional vocational education and training courses.
The Italian education system is organized into segments. First, is an integrated zero-to-six-year system, non-compulsory, with a total duration of six years, divided into infant education services, which enrolls children between the ages of three and thirty-six months, and pre-schools, accommodating children between the ages of three and six years. There are four cycles of education, including primary, secondary, and higher education that universities, institutions in art, music, and dance, and higher technical institutes offer. Schools in Italy do not have an internal ranking system.
Foreign students who plan to continue their studies at Italian educational institutions and who are still of compulsory schooling age, according to the Italian school system, are enrolled in the class corresponding to their age, unless the teaching board decides otherwise, considering multiple factors and requirements to be assessed by school board.
NYC Navigator cites there are almost 100,000 public schools and 20,000 private schools in the United States as of Q1 2024. New York City Public Schools is the largest school system in the United States (and among the largest in the world), with over 1.1 million students taught in more than 1,800 separate schools.

Christine Martin Barclay, recent Chair and CEO of EO Mobility Consultancy introduced the educational session.
Alane Boyd, Co-Founder of Workday Ninja expertly moderated the discussion. Alane is an operations and growth strategy expert specializing in AI and automation to enhance client efficiency. In 2022 her company launched ARVO an AI-powered visual documentation software for creating standard operating procedures, training documents, and company knowledge. “My team and I have discovered the fantastic benefits and value of using ChatGPT and automation. AI can be a helpful tool. We have learned by doing that asking the right questions of Chat GPT will rapidly get us the answers we need,” commented Simon Johnston of ICON Relocation.

The TIRA network has been busy! We congratulated our new members, hosted member events, presented at EuRA and recently hosted a public webinar.
TIRA Day
TIRA hosted a much-anticipated TIRA Day prior to the opening of the EuRA Congress 2024. Guest speakers included Heather Rychener, Head International Mobility and Group Benefits at The Adecco Group and Alane Boyd, Co-Founder of Workday Ninja, a company that specializes in Automation, Digitalization, and AI to enhance client efficiency. Heather listened to and heard suggestions from the members on improving two-way RMC-Service Provider communication, as she shared her pearls of wisdom from the Management Consulting perspective. Alane educated members on the many benefits of incorporating automation into our work-lives.
The network officially welcomed its newest members, Iñigo Lopez at BiCortex Languages and Karen Cygal at Global IQ to the TIRA community. Additionally, Karen Cygal assumed the role of Board member and Director of Sustainability.
The AGM ended with well-deserved praise and appreciation to our steadfast Chair, Christine Martin Barclay, Managing Director of EO Mobility and Vice Chair, Brenda Levis, President of NYC Navigator. We welcomed the dynamic new Chair and Director of Events, Brenda Levis, Founder and President of NYC Navigator and New England Navigator and Vice Chair and Director of Membership, Deborah Loones at Relocation Belgium.
Christine Martin Barclay commented that “It was a joy and privilege to lead this amazing association of dedicated entrepreneurs. I am proud of our accomplishments and am confident that Brenda and Deborah will lead TIRA into the next chapter of growth. Thank you, all for your warm support.”

TIRA recently hosted an in-depth webinar, “Versatility & Agility: Strategies for Navigating Uncertainty and Change.” Panelists included members, Irina Yakimenko, Managing PartnerIntermark, Rahul Batra, Managing Partner at Hudson McKenzie with special guest, Melissa Myer, Director, Global Mobility at Mastercard, and moderated by TIRA Partner, Susan Ginsberg, Founder at SRG ADVISORY. TIRA’s Chair, Brenda Levis welcomed the attendees.
We heard their views on the World at Work and Talent Mobility landscape and learned pragmatic examples from them on their organization’s transformation, how they empower their teams, support wellness and well-being into their hybrid or fully remote company culture, demonstrate agility, and in instances, have revised their companies’ mission and performance metrics in pursuit of purpose and growth.

Since its inception in 1996, IKAN Relocation has held “CARE” as its guiding principle, encapsulated in its Manifesto: “do the right thing while doing things right.” Over its nearly 30-year journey, this ethos has driven IKAN to consistently prioritize the well-being of all its stakeholders.
In 2022, IKAN took a significant step by incorporating the Environment as a key stakeholder. This was part of their comprehensive Environment and Sustainability Policy. Among several initiatives, one standout action plan was the commitment to an afforestation program, aimed at contributing positively to the planet.
Partnering with Impact Guru Foundation: A Green Vision
In 2023, IKAN partnered with the Impact Guru Foundation, a renowned NGO dedicated to environmental and health programs, to plant 10,000 saplings in Kanganheri Village near New Delhi. This project employs the Miyawaki method, a revolutionary technique developed by Japanese botanist Akira Miyawaki. The goal is to create an urban forest over three years, with a diverse mix of over 20 plant species. Once mature, these trees are expected to offset up to 20 kilograms of carbon emissions annually and absorb 44 pounds of harmful pollutants.
A Day of Hope and Action
On August 20, 2023, the planting event was filled with excitement and hope. IKAN, alongside Impact Guru, embarked on transforming a barren piece of land into a vibrant, biodiverse forest. The event saw participation from IKAN employees, clients, assignees, families, partners, and the Impact Guru team, all united in their commitment to a noble cause. This collaborative effort underscored the collective responsibility towards environmental stewardship.
A Long-term Commitment to Sustainability
Planting saplings is just the beginning of IKAN’s long-term vision. The company has pledged a three-year commitment to maintain these saplings, ensuring they receive the necessary care to thrive. This maintenance commitment is crucial for ensuring that the new forest will have a lasting positive impact on the local ecosystem and community.
Each tree planted under IKAN’s sponsorship is dedicated to global mobility colleagues and friends, symbolizing a global commitment to environmental sustainability. Participants in the planting event received certificates, marking their contribution to this significant environmental initiative.

Empathy is the ability to see things from another person’s perspective and feel their emotions. This understanding helps relocation professionals act with compassion to improve on and enhance a relocating families’ experience. Relocating can be a significant transition for families, filled with excitement, apprehension, and even sadness about leaving familiar surroundings behind.
The International Relocation Associates (TIRA) members share ways to support their transferees and their families when moving to anywhere in the world. Every independently owned member company leads their business with empathy. Offering empathy during this time of transition can make a world of difference and set the course for a smooth landing in a new location.
Acknowledge Their Feelings: Let them know that it is okay to feel a range of emotions about the move. Whether it is excitement, nervousness, or sadness, validating their feelings can help them feel understood.
Ikan Talent Mobility’s brand manifesto combines efficiency and care. The company embraces the challenge of change and carves out a path where expertise meets empathy. Their values include boldness and a commitment to go above and beyond to ensure a smooth journey, even if that means taking strategic risks on their behalf – this may mean respectfully steering their clients away from decisions that may not work in their favor.
Listen: Sometimes, all someone needs are to know that they are heard. Encourage them to share their thoughts and concerns prior to, during, and after the move. Avoid judgment and simply be present to hear what they have to say.

These sessions provide practical tips and insights to optimize transferees’ returns, ranging from understanding deductions to navigating legal nuances. Whether someone is an expatriate or a Belgian national, these sessions are crafted to equip transferees with the knowledge and tools needed to tackle their tax declarations with confidence.
Share Your Own Experiences: If you have gone through a similar relocation, sharing your own experiences can be comforting. It shows them that they are not alone, you have lived in their shoes, and that you understand what they are going through.
EO Mobility implemented “Take 3 to the Sea” so that whenever someone goes to the beach, they pick up 3 pieces of waste and recycle them. This initiative gets their relocated families and the team involved and connected to their host community, culture, and each other.
Stay Connected: Moving to a new place can feel isolating, especially in the beginning. Stay connected with the relocating family through calls, texts, or video chats. Let them know that you are there for them, even from a distance. While moving can be challenging, it also presents opportunities for growth and new experiences. Encourage the family to focus on the positives of their new adventure, whether it is exploring a new city, making new friends, or starting fresh.
NYC Navigator hosts regular events and activities located throughout NYC to engage their relocated employees and families into the community and introduce them to others. Many families have made long-lasting friendships from these high touch gatherings. Transferees who moved to NYC up to seven years ago, still attend these scheduled events.
Practice Patience: Adjusting to an unfamiliar environment takes time. Be patient with the family as they navigate this major life transition. Offer support, encouragement, and practical guidance. Help them to feel welcome.
Relocating to a new country can be both an exciting and daunting experience, especially when moving to a culturally rich and vibrant place like Luxembourg. We heard their views on the World at Work and Talent Mobility landscape and learned pragmatic examples from them on their organization’s transformation, how they empower their teams, demonstrate agility, and in instances, have revised their companies’ mission and performance metrics in pursuit of purpose and growth.
The panelists reflected on the ever-changing geopolitical, economic, and work landscape.
Versatility mitigates unpredictability.
Melissa Myer, Director Global Mobility at Mastercard shared, “We are changing the way we are working and looking at things. As a company, we are being more creative, flexible, and high touch. We are pivoting, adopting new skill sets, and exploring how to accomplish our key objectives.”
Irina Yakimenko added, “We operate and manage in the region where there are two wars and other conflicts. Our business has been uprooted, and as such the Duty of Care has prevailed over everything. We are looking at how we support our clients, our transferees, and our own team. This means listening closely to our stakeholders and developing new services, implementing risk assessment and mitigation measures, and growing our business in Eastern Europe and the Balkans.”
Susan Ginsberg commented that siloed operational models are becoming obsolete and cumbersome. She asked the panelists to share examples of how they nurture an inclusive company culture.
Agility is an essential skill.
Rahul Batra reflected that, “We came out of the pandemic and Brexit being more resilient and are proudly a net zero firm. Our company is now fully remote and digital, and that has helped us manage the onslaught on business. Importantly, our team knows we trust them, and they trust us. Our diverse team members are loyal and appreciate our flexibility. We plan fun monthly events to spark our collegiality and enterprising spirit.”
Global Mobility is adopting a changed mindset. That is, evolving as an interdependent ecosystem that leverages an automated process, helps drive down costs and duplication, and enables time-saving efficiencies to allow for solutions-creation and innovation – while ensuring high touch support remains essential.
“Beginning three years ago, our firm was built on automation, AI, and machine learning. We have leaned into how we source our business, how we scale ourselves and others. We are fully a net zero firm, too. We are delighted that our entire global team is invested in and feels part of our journey and growth,” remarked Karen Cygal.

The most important achievement has been elevating TIRA’s importance and visibility on the Global Mobility stage worldwide. TIRA is a respected presence at global mobility conferences around the world.
You know by now that TIRA was invited to present at the EuRA, Vilamoura conference! Our panel session is entitled, “Creating the Future – Integrating Digital Transformation in Your Organization.” For those attending EuRA, we hope you attend the plenary session on Tuesday, April 30 at 14.00 – 15.00. The session will be moderated by Alane Boyd, the AI specialist and Co-Founder of BGBO CO. Alane will delve into the practical benefits and value of Generative AI with member panelists. The plenary session will tie in well with the keynote speaker, Dan Sodergren, who is a well-known UK speaker on AI and the future of work. Christine and Brenda commented, “We are immensely proud that TIRA will receive the elevated exposure it well deserves.”
TIRA has conducted several #GlobalMobilityMatters discussions with corporate HR/Mobility leaders and our partner, Susan Ginsberg. The series has featured conversations with Becky Woods, Sr. Director Global Mobility at ADP; Tanya Mariottini, Director Global Mobility at Twilio; and Bob Church, Jr. Senior Manager, Global Mobility at Tronox. Topics covered with these corporate leaders include, The Future of Work, Defining the Client and Customer Experience, and their views on the emergence of digital and AI systems in their roles. TIRA Celebrates Earth Day 2024
Each year, over one billion people around the world take part in Earth Day. Some pick up paper, some pick up plastics, and others plant trees or clean up their local park. Earth Day 2024 is committed to making the world a happier, cleaner, and healthier place for all to live.
The theme for Earth Day, 2024 is Planet vs. Plastics. The goal is to reduce the use of plastics by 60%, and to spread the importance of reducing the use of plastics and its benefits to our health. The goal is to completely reduce single-use plastics and push for a U.N. Treaty on Plastic Pollution.
We welcomed TIRA members to participate in Earth Day throughout the entire month of April. Stay tuned for posts about their activities to save our planet on our social media channels.
A TIRA priority is “Giving Back. Doing Good.” In keeping with our collective mission to Save the Planet, we created a Sustainability Manifesto as a general framework for members.

The report provides a framework that looks at four pillars, innovativeness, inclusiveness, sustainability, and resilience. These overall findings, at a macro level, derive from Chief Economists. They present opportunities and a realization that the world is only halfway to achieving growth.
“A simple ‘return’ to GDP growth is not enough,” says Saadia Zahidi, the Forum’s Managing Director for the Centre for the New Economy and Society. “Instead, each country must undertake a unique and complex journey towards achieving innovative, inclusive, sustainable and resilient growth.”

The ‘good word’ has spread about the benefits of TIRA membership! We extended a warm welcome to new members Micah Bellieu at Fluency Corp in the U.S., Ammar Hussein at Hussein Consultoria Em Imigracao E Relocation Ltd. from Brazil, and June Ranson at Woburn International Group Limited in New Zealand. We are confident that they will be active members of the TIRA community.
Additionally, we are in the process of reviewing several outstanding prospective companies for membership and aim to complete this process soon. Thank you, Veronique Haverhals at RSH Relocation Services Holland and Sylvie Schmit at European Relocation Services for your hard work.
Our events calendar was quite busy this year. TIRA hosted a members’ roundtable organized by Brenda Levis, Vice Chair and Director of Events, and President of NYC Navigator and New England Navigator, “Working Together Towards a Sustainable Future” with special guest Cristina Venegas from EcoVadis. Members learned from EcoVadis, a trusted global sustainability ratings partner and discussed how to transform their companies. Members view sustainability as a mission-critical imperative to create long-term value by considering how each organization operates in their ecological, social, and economic environments. Members believe that sustainability is built on the assumption that developing pragmatic strategies fosters company longevity. Since the roundtable, nine TIRA members have been certified by EcoVadis.
A valuable benefit of being a member of TIRA is its commitment to learning and sharing knowledge. In September, the network hosted a roundtable for its members around the world, “How to Use AI and Automation in Your Business” led by AI specialist, Alane Boyd. Alane is Co-Founder of BGBO Co. an operations and growth strategy agency utilizing AI and automation to improve efficiency for their clients.
The Generative AI workshop focused on the intersection of AI technologies and their impact on the processes, efficiency, and experiences within the global relocation industry. Members have a thirst for knowledge and look to the allied network to introduce the latest information, top-notch speakers, and trends for which all members can grow, and therefore, their businesses thrive. Since the remote workshop, members have shared that utilization of Generative AI has improved their team’s productivity, simplified mundane tasks, and enabled more time to dedicate to high touch support of their transferees and innovating solutions.
In October, TIRA hosted a boat cruise around Boston Harbor during the Worldwide ERC’s October Global Workforce Symposium in Boston. Members from around the world invited guests including corporate clients, RMCs and potential TIRA members. Close to fifty people attended the warm afternoon event.
Christine Martin, TIRA Chair shared, “I was delighted with the positive feedback about the cruise. I am very proud to lead this wonderful organization of agile and innovative entrepreneurs. On behalf of the Board and members, we thank Brenda for the time and effort she consistently puts forth to organize worthwhile and enjoyable events.” Brenda Levis is a New Englander at heart. She commented, “I was born and raised in New Hampshire and am proud to share my New England roots. Everyone seemed to enjoy themselves and had fun!”
Chris Dash from Dogtainers, a pet travel specialist company will be our last featured members’ roundtable of the year.

30/10/2023Blog / EventsThe International Relocation Associates (TIRA) hosted a boat cruise around the Boston Harbor during the Worldwide ERC’s October Global Workforce Symposium in Boston.
TIRA members from around the world invited guests including corporate clients, RMCs and potential TIRA members. Close to fifty people attended the afternoon event. The weather was perfect – sunny, and warm.
Guests enjoyed delicious lunch options including local seafood and mouth-watering lobster, as well as vegetarian options.

Network members leverage their experience and exchange best practices that add value to the global mobility industry and global demand for talent.
TIRA members and their guests felt refreshed and enjoyed the sites along the harbor. Christine Martin, TIRA Chair and CEO of EO Mobility shared, “I was delighted with the positive feedback about the cruise. I am very proud to lead this wonderful organization of agile and innovative entrepreneurs. On behalf of the Board and members, we thank Brenda for the time and effort she consistently puts forth to organize worthwhile and enjoyable events.”
Brenda Levis, TIRA’s Vice Chair and Director of Events, and President of NYC Navigator and New England Navigator organized the event. Brenda is a New Englander at heart, so she was delighted to organize an event in Boston. She commented, “I was born and raised in New Hampshire and am proud to share my New England roots. Everyone seemed to enjoy themselves and had fun!”

The network recently hosted a roundtable for its members around the world, “How to Use AI and Automation in Your Business” led by AI specialist, Alane Boyd. Alane is Co-Founder of BGBO Co. an operations and growth strategy agency utilizing AI and automation to improve efficiency for their clients. In 2022 her company launched ARVO an AI-powered visual documentation software for creating standard operating procedures, training documents, and company knowledge. Alane has written and been featured in Entrepreneur, HuffPost, South by Southwest (SXSW), PBS, FemFounder, and many more.
First, why does the emergence of Generative AI matter?
The relocation industry is experiencing significant transformations through the integration of AI automation, revolutionizing how businesses operate and the serve corporate clients and transferees. AI automation is enhancing efficiency, accuracy, and the overall experience for businesses and individuals relocating worldwide.
Incorporating AI automation in the relocation industry streamlines operations, reduces costs, enhances customer satisfaction, and ensures a seamless relocation process for employees and their families. Additionally, it’s crucial to address privacy concerns, remain compliant with regulations, and maintain a human touch in critical interactions to build trust and a positive user experience.
How can AI automation be used to optimize TIRA members’ efficiency and enhance the customer experience?
The International Relocation Associates (TIRA) workshop on Generative AI focused on the intersection of AI technologies and their impact on the processes, efficiency, and experiences within the global relocation industry. Members have a thirst for knowledge and look to the allied network to introduce new information, top-notch speakers, and trends for which all members can grow, and their businesses thrive.
The discussion covered topics related to the three primary uses of AI automation: text, images, and video. Alane explained that the most asked question is, “Will AI replace me and my job?” Her answer was resoundingly, “No. It is not going to replace your job. It’s going to replace the most boring, tedious parts of your job.”
Alane went on to explain that Generative AI acts as an assistant at work and in your daily life. It is not human. It is not an executive. She commented that, “AI is the best assistant you could ask for. It doesn’t get tired. It is always available, and it is happy to do the work.”
As of March 2023, there were close to 15,000 startup AI apps in the U.S. The most talked about apps are Bard (Google), ChatGPT (Open AI), and CoPilot (Microsoft). Interestingly, Microsoft owns 49% of AI apps.
“AI is so much more than just ChatGPT. There are thousands of AI platforms available that can be used to solve your specific needs,” added Ms. Boyd. Examples of some exciting new apps include Jasper that is helpful for content writing and gives a framework for itineraries, Krisp that deletes background noise, and Grain that records and transcribes. Given the rapid emergence of new apps, the AI Specialist recommended to search for www.thereisanappforthat.com to identify pragmatic apps to streamline work and improve productivity.
Members learned the many benefits and limitations of using apps. A benefit of using Generative AI is that it provides a starting place for and improves writing skills. One of the limitations of using an app is that if the input is unclear, the output will provide the wrong or inaccurate information.
Additionally, attendees emphasized the importance of always ensuring privacy and compliance.
