Reconciling Dilemmas with Fons Trompenaars
TIRA Explores Reconciling Dilemmas with Fons Trompenaars
The International Relocation Associates (TIRA) is committed to supporting the ongoing professional development of its members through thoughtful dialogue and shared learning. As part of this commitment, TIRA recently hosted a member roundtable featuring Fons Trompenaars, internationally recognized organizational theorist and expert in cross-cultural management, who led a discussion on Reconciling Dilemmas.
The session offered members a valuable opportunity to reflect on the cultural and leadership challenges they navigate daily in global mobility—and to explore new ways of addressing them.
Understanding Dilemmas in a Global Context
Fons Trompenaars is widely known for his work on national culture differences and Dilemma Theory, developed with Charles Hampden-Turner. His research examines how diverse cultures approach tensions between values such as individual versus group orientation, rules versus relationships, or global consistency versus local adaptation.
A key message from the roundtable was that these tensions are not problems to be solved by choosing one side over another. Instead, there are dilemmas to be reconciled—with the potential to create stronger, more sustainable outcomes when leaders learn to integrate competing values.
As Trompenaars shared during the discussion, “Dilemmas are human. Integrity is creating wholeness through reconciling dilemmas.”
Why This Matters to TIRA Members
For global mobility and relocation professionals, cultural dilemmas are not theoretical—they arise in everyday work supporting individuals, families, and organizations across borders. Whether managing expectations between headquarters and host locations, balancing policy with flexibility, or navigating differing communication styles, TIRA members regularly operate at the intersection of cultures.
The roundtable highlighted how applying a reconciliation mindset can lead to:
- Greater understanding of underlying cultural tensions
- More effective cross-cultural communication and collaboration
- Leadership decisions that balance structure with empathy
- Improved long-term business and people outcomes
Trompenaars emphasized that organizations which reconcile dilemmas—rather than defaulting to either/or decisions—are better positioned for sustainable performance, particularly in multicultural environments. This process, to recognize, respect, reconcile, and realize dilemmas, helps individuals and organizations to reconcile dilemmas and strive toward servant leadership. Servant leaders enable others to do better.
Leadership Through Reconciliation: From Theory to Practice
The discussion also reinforced the relevance of servant leadership, an approach that focuses on helping others grow, perform, and succeed. By recognizing differences, respecting diverse perspectives, and working toward integrated solutions, leaders can foster trust and innovation across cultures without requiring uniformity.
These principles align closely with TIRA’s values and its role as a collaborative community where members share knowledge, learn from one another, and strengthen and thrive in their professional practice. This dynamic ecosystem adds value to each of the independent business owners.
Moving Beyond Either/Or Thinking
At the core of the roundtable was a shift in perspective: dilemmas invite leaders to move beyond compromise and toward a “both/and” approach. By finding a third way that honors multiple values, professionals can develop solutions that are practical, inclusive, and culturally informed.
For TIRA members, this framework offers a powerful and pragmatic lens for navigating the complexities of today’s global mobility landscape.
Advancing TIRA’s Commitment to Learning and Leadership
This roundtable with Fons Trompenaars is one example of how TIRA brings members together to explore ideas that shape leadership and practice across the relocation and mobility industry. Through shared learning and open exchange, TIRA continues to support its members in adapting, growing, and leading effectively in an increasingly interconnected world.
